Home owners increasingly understand how easily
unauthorised third parties may intercept their emails as they traverse the Internet,
or may access their emails while they are stored on compromised email server systems.
During a home automation project, sensitive details about your
home security, access control or surveillance systems need to be communicated
conveniently and in writing - but also more securely. Clever Home
is one of the first home automation
and security companies in Australia to support encrypted and signed email communications with home owners.
How to communicate more securely by email with Clever Home:
- Install free Thunderbird
email client software on your Windows, MacOS or Linux PC
- Use our support@cleverhome.com.au
address when emailing sensitive information.
- Compose your home automation emails in text format only (just hold down Shift while
you click on Write new email) rather than in html, to enable Digital
Signing and Encryption to work properly.
- Use Thunderbird's Digital Signature support to verify that home automation emails
appearing to come from Clever Home are genuine, and to allow us to verify
that your emails are indeed coming from you.
- Encrypt your home automation emails using Thunderbird before they leave you on
their journey across the Internet, and keep your visible email signature
footer as brief as possible to minimise repeated text content in your
encrypted emails. Use POP3 rather than IMAP.
- Encrypt and/or password protect sensitive home automation attachments, and convey the
password or pass-phrase within the body of an encrypted email.
